Dear Steve and Shirley, I’ve been with my boyfriend for going on 3 years, but he is still legally married. He is currently living with his grown son, so I trusted him when he told me his marriage was over. But here’s the problem. He and I travel together, and it’s like we’re a real couple when we’re out of town. When we’re in town, he hangs out with my immediate family, but I have never been invited to any of his family’s get-togethers. He has access to my house, and he can come and go as he pleases, but I’ve never spent time over at his son’s house with him. When we are out in public, there’s always a third person with us, so it doesn’t look like we’re on a date. When I complain, he brushes me off. He claims that he’s trying to protect his wife’s feelings, but she knows that we’re dating. She hears rumors all of the time, and whenever she does, she’ll text my boyfriend and tell him he’s embarrassing her. It adds to the guilt that he carries for leaving her. He said he feels like a failure because he couldn’t make his marriage work, so he tries to protect her feelings. I have told him numerous times to go back to her, but he assured me that he’s never going back. Then the obvious thing would be to divorce her. My mom wants me to give him an ultimatum, but I don’t want to push him away. What’s the real reason he hasn’t divorced his wife? Is he a waste of time?
