🇯🇵🔥OMG It’s officially your 24th birthday in Tokyo, @58robbie Robinson James Peete! 🎂❤️ This is his FOURTH birthday in Tokyo, and I’m sitting here wondering how four years went by so fast.🥹🥹🥹 When Robinson left for Japan at just 19, the world was still upside down from the pandemic. His high school graduation and college trajectory had been completely disrupted, and Japan was one of the last countries to reopen its borders. Which meant when it was finally time for him to go… he had to go alone. No Mom coming along to get him settled. No Dad carrying the extra bags. Just our 19-year-old son getting on that plane, landing in Tokyo for the first time and figuring out how to adult on the other side of the world. And mannn, did he figure it out. He didn’t just learn Japanese…he developed a beautiful command of the language. But what makes me even prouder is the respect he has for the culture, the people and the country that has become his second home. There’s a calm, almost sensei-like quality about him now that makes me smile because I remember that dismayed, discombobulated 19-year-old who left home not quite knowing what was ahead. He built a LIFE. He built a COMMUNITY. He found his people. This year he had something like 5 different birthday celebrations held for him around Tokyo because all his local spots and vendors wanted to celebrate him. 😂 At this point, Robbie is basically the Tokyo version of Norm from Cheers because everywhere he walks in, somebody knows his name! 😂❤️ Watching your child find his place in the world literally halfway around the world is one of those bittersweet parenting moments nobody prepares you for. I miss him terribly, but I am so incredibly proud of the life he has created. About to start his senior year at @templeunivjapan! Your mom and pops love you beyond words. 🇯🇵❤️🎂 Okaasan Desu!!! 🙋🏽♀️Otōsan Desu!!!💁🏾♂️
