🩸 SICKLE CELL FACT OF THE DAY: YOUR BONES & JOINTS MATTER ❤️ Sickle cell disease can affect more than your blood—it can affect your bones and joints, too. When bone tissue doesn’t receive enough oxygen-rich blood, serious complications can develop. One of those complications is avascular necrosis (AVN), which occurs when reduced blood supply causes bone tissue to become damaged. AVN can particularly affect areas such as the hips and shoulders, potentially affecting mobility and quality of life. ⚠️ LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. Watch for symptoms such as: • Persistent hip, groin, thigh, or shoulder pain • Pain that worsens with activity • Joint stiffness • Difficulty walking or moving the affected joint • New or worsening bone or joint pain Sickle cell can also be associated with chronic bone and joint pain and an increased risk of bone infections such as osteomyelitis. If pain is new, persistent, or getting worse, talk with your healthcare provider. ❤️ PROTECT YOUR BONES. PROTECT YOUR MOBILITY. KNOW SICKLE CELL. At Kier’s Hope Foundation, we believe knowledge gives warriors and families another tool to advocate for their health. EDUCATE • ADVOCATE • SUPPORT • EMPOWER Knowledge Creates Awareness.
