The FBI just got hacked by ShinyHunters, and this one could get really ugly really fast. The hacking group ShinyHunters claims it compromised the FBI’s Jobs portal and accessed highly sensitive personnel data. The group then gave 404 Media a sample appearing to contain data on 5,000 FBI employees, including names, home addresses, phone numbers, and spouse information. Think about that for a second. These are FBI agents who investigate cybercriminals, organized crime, gangs, terrorism suspects. So if this data gets released, the original hack may only be attack #1, and the stolen data can become fuel for attack #2 (targeting agents and their families, sophisticated scams, and potentially even espionage). The bigger cybersecurity lesson for ALL organizations is that they need to know “When they get in, what can they reach?” Because the breach gets attackers through the door, but your data architecture determines the blast radius. Talked about this wild story this morning on iHeartRadio’s KFBK Morning News.
