There is not a single person who has ever said “you know what sounds good right now? A mint julep.” Said no one ever. The mint julep is the fruitcake of cocktails. Everybody knows about it. Nobody wants one. But Derby weekend is here, so I decided to see if I could make one that doesn’t taste like I brushed my teeth with bourbon. What I changed: Ditched the crushed ice. That’s the problem. All that shaved ice turns it into minty water and you lose the bourbon completely. I used Old Grand-Dad Bonded at 100 proof (high rye, bold, actually has flavor), added mint and simple syrup, muddled it together, and used a clear cube instead of that mountain of crushed ice. The verdict: Shock and Awe Also special shout out to @drinkbigice for wanting to partner with me on this idea. It truly was a genuine experiment and a happy surprise. …am I mint julep girly?? #howtomakeamintjulep #cocktail #derby #kentuckyderby #cocktails
