💗 Meet Mya Monday — On Her Own Time My stress about Mya being delayed started very early on. For the longest time, I remember thinking, “Once she starts doing this, she’ll catch up.” Then we would reach the next milestone and I’d think the same thing again. But Mya’s milestone timeline has always been just that — Mya’s timeline. She stopped hitting the typical developmental milestones around 6 months old. The last milestone I remember her hitting “on time” was sitting up. She rarely rolled over. At 11 months, she started pulling up on things. At 16 months, she could stand independently. She never crawled — she scooted everywhere instead. At 19 months, she started climbing stairs. At 21 months, she started taking steps. And right before her 2nd birthday, she was finally full-on walking. Looking back, I spent so much time waiting for that moment when she would “catch up.” I didn’t know then what I know now: Mya was going to do things when Mya was ready. We started OT and PT through First Steps when she was around a year and a half old, and she stayed in the program until she aged out at 3. And if you have a child under 3 who is delayed or you have concerns about their development, I cannot say enough good things about First Steps. They were absolutely amazing for us and such an important part of Mya’s early years. Almost 10 years later, she’s still doing things on her own timeline. Some things have taken longer. Some things have looked completely different than we expected. And some milestones we once wondered if we would ever see eventually came. One thing Mya has taught me over and over again is that different timing doesn’t make a milestone any less worth celebrating. 💕 We celebrate them all — whenever they come. 🥹💗 #MeetMya #MeetMyaMonday #DevelopmentalDelays #SpecialNeedsParenting #CelebrateEveryMilestone
