Today, we celebrate 250 years of America.
Today, we celebrate 250 years of America. That’s 250 years of challenges, progress and a continued effort to live up to the words of our founding document: that “all men (and women) are created equal.” I believe that principle is fundamental to who we are and what it means to be an American. That’s why I spent this morning at the PUSH Headquarters honoring the legacy of someone who also believed in that promise of our democracy: Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. During this past legislative session, I worked to pass the Jesse Jackson Sr. Young Voter Empowerment Law (HB 4339), which will ensure every eligible high school student has the opportunity to register to vote in a trusted, nonpartisan school environment. Our democracy works best when we expand, rather than restrict, access to the ballot box. That starts with making sure our young people receive a strong civic education and an introduction to exercising their right to vote. Because they aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow—they’re the leaders of today. And their voices matter.
