❤️ SICKLE CELL FACT OF THE DAY Sickle cell disease is present at birth, but symptoms often don’t begin until a baby is about 5–6 months old. Why? Babies are born with high levels of fetal hemoglobin, which helps protect their red blood cells from sickling. As fetal hemoglobin decreases during the first months of life, symptoms of sickle cell disease may begin to appear. Early signs can include swelling of the hands and feet, anemia, tiredness, and jaundice. Knowledge creates awareness. Awareness creates change. ❤️ Kier’s Hope Foundation — Working to change the shape of Sickle Cell Disease.
